Tips for Donating Puzzles: Making a Meaningful Impact

How to Share the Joy of Puzzles with Others

Puzzles can bring hours of fun, challenge, and learning to people of all ages. If you have puzzles that you’re no longer using, donating them is a wonderful way to spread that joy and help others. Here are some practical tips to ensure your puzzle donations make the greatest possible impact.

1. Check Puzzle Completeness

Before donating, take a little time to assemble the puzzle or count the pieces to make sure it’s complete. Missing pieces can be frustrating for the recipient. If you’re unable to check, note on the box that the puzzle is “as is.”

2. Clean and Organize

Wipe down puzzle pieces with a gentle, dry cloth to remove dust and debris. Ensure the box is clean and sturdy. Place all puzzle pieces into a clear, sealed plastic bag to keep them from getting lost. Put the bagged pieces back inside the original box so the image and piece count remain visible.

Seal the box by using a material that won’t damage the box, such as painter’s tape or washi tape, to hold the box shut and prevent it from opening. If the original box is damaged, consider transferring the pieces to a resealable bag and printing out an image of the completed puzzle.

3. Choose the Right Donation Destination

Opportunities to donate are endless. reach out to local libraries, faith-based centers, thrift stores, schools, senior centers and other community hubs.  Others prefer exchanges or online platforms.  The goal is always the same – to create opportunities to share joy of puzzling with others.

Many places welcome puzzle donations, including:

  • Local libraries
  • Schools and childcare centers
  • Senior centers and assisted living facilities
  • Community centers
  • Thrift stores and charity shops

Call ahead to confirm that your chosen destination accepts puzzles and ask about any specific requirements.

4. Group Similar Puzzles Together

If you’re donating multiple puzzles, group them by age appropriateness or type This helps staff distribute them to the right audiences.

5. Provide Clear Labels

Label each puzzle with the number of pieces, age recommendation, and any special features (like large pieces for easier handling). Clear labeling makes sorting and selecting easier for donation centers and recipients.

6. Consider Donating Puzzle Accessories

If you have puzzle mats, sorting trays, or storage containers, these can be donated along with the puzzles to enhance the experience for recipients.

7. Be Mindful of Condition

Donate puzzles in good condition: avoid donating those with excessive wear, torn pieces, or significant damage. If a puzzle is only slightly worn but still usable, let the recipient know.

8. Share Your Story

PUZZLE. LOVE. SHARE. If a puzzle holds special meaning or fun memories, consider including a short note. Personal stories can enrich the donation experience for the next puzzle enthusiast. Free printable puzzle notes and decals are available for download on the Be A Puzzle Elf printables page.
